110 - 114 Barking Road, London

Overview

Designed by Davy Smith Architects, 110-114 Barking Road transforms the corner site of a disused public house into an area with new residential, retail and library facilities. Working alongside the architects, developers Ash Properties have provided 18 new homes to Newham, London, with serviced apartment options available. The development provides 265 sqm of prime retail space at the ground floor and 1125 sqm of residential floorspace across five storeys.

Vobster Architectural were pleased to manufacture and supply the Portland wet cast stone that was used on the project to define each level of the building. This detailing supported the architects design vision and assisted the site in integrating within the local streetscape.

Concept to Completion

Taking inspiration from the Grade II listed Canning Town library across the street, the architects selected traditional materials and applied them using a modern approach. The cast stone components were designed with a rain drip detail running along the top to preserve the integrity of the stone, reduce maintenance and increase the longevity of the product. Our design team worked hard to ensure the stone banding matched and followed the profile of the building, for a beautifully integrated addition to the facade.

The red bricks were laid in a unique protruding wave pattern, creating a textural contrast against the smooth stone and fully defining the corner edge of the building. The stone banding wraps around the facade to incorporate it into the local vernacular, for a polished addition to the streetscape. Six years on the development still retains its striking contrast and visual impact, a testament to the quality of the design and materials specified.
