Radley College, Oxfordshire

Overview

Radley College is an independent boarding school, nestled in Oxfordshire and widely recognised as one of England’s most beautiful schools. Radley College presents stunning Victorian architecture and landscaping across an 800-acre campus.

Commencing construction in 2019, All Brick & Stone Ltd selected Vobster Architectural cast stone for a new boarding house, known as ‘L Social’. Gray Baynes + Shew designed the new accommodation to seamlessly complement the traditional architecture seen across the site, whilst still reflecting the contemporary influences from the period of the new addition. This cements the legacy of Radley College and any additional buildings to the site for years to come.

Feltham Construction managed the formation of the new £5m accommodation and social space, which now provides facilities for five year groups and staff members.

The ‘L Social’ boarding house at Radley College involved a reconfiguration of the Old Wardens House, built in 1935 by two old Radleians. A modern glazed vestibule beautifully connects the older building to the ‘H’ shaped new build.

The Bath cast stone window surrounds create a stunning contrast against the red brickwork, which was laid in a quintessential and traditional Flemish bond. Cast stone is synonymous with elegant architecture, as a decorative and structural material. The stone window surrounds provide an integrated modernity to the building, whilst also providing longevity through the enhanced waterproofing of the banding.

Vobster’s technical team worked with the site specifications to design bespoke moulds in a string course and window surround banding, offering a completely clean and unified finish to the project. The team were proud to contribute to the prestigious grounds at Radley College.
