Corbels and Features
What are Corbels?
A corbel is a weight-bearing piece of stone, designed as a bracket to sit deeply into the wall to support the structure. Corbels can be used to accentuate window sills and surrounds and can be simply carved or elaborately so to reflect more traditional, renaissance architecture. The word corbel derives from the French word for crow, due to its beak-like appearance. Often found below quoins, a corbel seamlessly ties the wall structure with the roof or top levels of buildings or to integrate a balcony to the main wall. They can also be used internally for fireplaces.
